In 1769, while serving as Spain’s governor of the Californias, Gaspar de Portolá set out from San Diego with orders to establish a mission at Monterey. Overshooting Monterey he marched on to San Francisco Bay. In this scene, Mount Diablo is visible in the distance beyond the bay.
